Progress in context

How the progress estimate works

The Reading Time tool estimates how long it will take to finish a book based on its word count. The median word count in this catalog is 62,751 words, which corresponds to about 273 minutes of reading at an average pace.

These estimates are rough guides, as individual reading speeds vary. Use them to plan your reading sessions, whether you have a quick break or a long weekend.

Quick Reads

For those with limited time, 10 books are classified as quick reads, taking under a couple of hours. 'A Little Dusky Hero' at 88 minutes is a good example.

Steady Reads

26 books fall into the steady category, requiring a few hours of reading. 'Great Uncle Hoot-Toot' at 147 minutes fits here.

Immersive Books

The largest group, 44 books, are immersive reads that take over four hours. 'The Pirate City' at 396 minutes is one such title.

Sustainable Progress: Using Pages to Plan Your Reading

The Reading Tracker is built around pages, not sections or minutes. It records your current page, total pages, and a daily goal, and it estimates when you will finish. This approach gives you a concrete way to measure progress, For readers who are reading a short book or a long one.

How the Page Count Works

When the catalog does not have a fixed page count, the tracker estimates total pages by dividing the word count by 250 words per page. For example, The William Henry Letters — Edition Insights has 76,993 words, so the initial estimate would be about 308 pages (76,993 / 250 ≈ 308). You can replace this with the page count from your own edition or reading app if it differs.

This flexibility is important because page counts vary between editions. By allowing you to adjust the total, the tracker stays accurate for the specific copy you are reading.

Setting a Daily Goal

The default daily goal is 20 pages, but you can change it to any number that fits your schedule. If you read 20 pages a day of The William Henry Letters, you would finish in about 15 days (308 / 20 ≈ 15.4, rounded up to 16). If you prefer a lighter pace, you might set a goal of 10 pages, which would take about 31 days.

The tracker uses your goal to estimate remaining time and finish days. These are proportional estimates, so they adjust as you update your progress.

Recording Progress

You update your current page as you read, and the tracker calculates how many pages remain. It then estimates the remaining time in minutes and the number of days until completion. This feedback can help you stay on track without feeling pressured.

Your progress is saved in your browser's local storage, so you do not need an account. This means your data stays on your device, and you can pick up where you left off on the same browser.

Planning with an Example

Suppose you choose The William Henry Letters — Edition Insights. With an estimated 308 pages and a daily goal of 20, you would expect to finish in about 16 days. If you find you have more time, you could increase the goal to 30 pages and finish in about 11 days. The tracker makes these adjustments easy, helping you read at a pace that works for you.
